Punjab (DLN): SCERT Punjab has issued online applications for SCERT TET Exam 2011. Punjab TET Exam 2011 will be held on 12th June 2011. PSTET Online application 2011 is available from today 27th April 2011. Last date for online applications for Punjab State Teacher Eligibility Test 2011 (PSTET 2011) is available from 13th May 2011 5:00 PM.

Punjab TET 2011 exam date is 12th June 2011 that will be conducted by the Department of School Education, Government of Punjab.

Technology Just laptops, corporators demand proper software too

For the corporators of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC), all things should seem pictureperfect before they can actually begin with their work.

Not content with the laptops and official email ids given by the civic body, they have now demanded software that will provide them all the data and information about their respective wards so that they can work in a better way.

According to the BMC sources, lot of corporators are complaining about the lack of necessary statistics of on- going development works in their wards. Details like population of the ward, provision of budget for various works, important locations, water supply, flood prone areas etc. are essential for their knowledge, they say.

Shiv Sena's Sunil Prabhu, who is also a BMC house leader, has asked the civic information technology ( IT) department the need of such software, which will have all these details, for the corporators. " While carrying out civic works in our wards, we often require such information and every time we have to keep asking civic officials for the details.

If this data is readily available in our laptops, it will be very convenient for us," he said.

Officials of the IT department are still mulling over the software proposal as the past experience of the corporators about use of laptops has not been very encouraging.

The BMC, in 2009, had provided all the 227 corporators a Sony Vaio laptop with the intention of reducing the paper work and providing civic agendas on their computers. Two months ago, the civic body also gave them personal email ids. However, leave alone logging in, majority of the corporators are not even using the laptops, said an official.

Standing committee chairman Rahul Shevale said, " It's true that the corporators have been given laptops and the civic body had even organized a computer training programme for them to learn the know- how of computers.

But the SAP software, which the BMC uses to connect all its system, is not yet installed in their laptops. Also the lack of necessary software is also hampering them from using the laptops." We are discussing the software issue with the corporators about their requirements and how it can be developed, said an official.

However, he admitted that the software can be useful for the corporators for carrying out development works in their wards.

New courses will revitalize medical education

The medical education sector is beset with several problems. The country is facing a shortage of doctors and specialists. We do not produce enough doctors and we do not have enough medical colleges.

In addition, there are few colleges in states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan, while there is a cluster in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Doctors do not go to rural areas as there are no facilities for them to live, no appropriate schools for their children. In addition, they are unfit to work in rural areas as there is no skill orientation.

They are used to working in teams and are not trained in addressing common problems like snake bite, diarrhea, and using catheters.

Steps are being taken to address these issues. New curriculum being developed by MCI will train doctors in addressing common problems. We are increasing seats for undergraduates in existing medical colleges. More colleges are being opened in existing hospitals of the Railways, ESI, Army, and there is a move to open medical schools in district hospitals with at least 350 beds. The norms to set up medical colleges have been relaxed.

The land requirement has been reduced from 20 acres to 10 acres. Faculty shortage is another important issue. In order to address this, the Medical Council has taken several steps. The maximum age for the appointment of faculty has been raised from 65 years to 70 years. This will help overcome shortage to some extent.

The Diplomate of National Board in Family Medicine or the DNB has been recognised as being equivalent to an MD, so that DNB qualified professionals can be recruited as teachers in medical colleges. We are also considering letting doctors with requisite skills in the private sector to teach in medical colleges.

Result for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), an all India examination which is conducted every year for the direct admission in M.Tech courses at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) around the country would be made available today at 10:00 a.m (IST) at GATE offices of IISc, seven IITs and on the official websites of GATE Offices.

GATE this year was conducted online and offline on 30th January'11 and 13th February'11 respectively. Those candidates who would not be able to make to the offices can check the result on its official website on http://www.iitk.ac.in/gate/gate2011.

Maharashtra Board to give 1 mark each for
incorrect questions in SSC English exam

SSC students who have attempted erroneous questions in the English language paper, will be given one mark per erroneous question attempted. Admitting to errors in setting the questions in English language papers this year, the government has also said that it will check if there were errors in the Geography question paper too.

In a written reply, the government has informed that in the English language paper set for the March 2011 SSC board exams, ambiguity was found in question no. 4(1) (c) (3) and 2 (c) (2) of the English Second/ Third Language (17) paper and question no. 1 (a) (1) of the English First language - all sets.

Therefore, all the concerned board officials have been instructed to give 1 mark per erroneous question for each student attempting the questions.

MLC Vikram Kale vide a calling attention motion raised the issue in the house. He also raised concerns about the students' percentage getting affected and their prospects getting affected. He alleged that errors were also found in the Geography question paper.

He also said the quality of paper used by the board was not up to the standard. MLC Ramnath Mote pointed out that the question paper checking is already complete. But there has been a delay of one and a half hours in some areas and questioned what the government planned to do regarding that. Minister Rajendra Darda also announced that henceforth the education department will take care that only clean white paper would be used.

Maharashtra MBA CET 2011 results to be released

As per the official confirmation, Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) Maharashtra will release the MAH MBA/MMSCET results today i.e. 11-04-2011 at 5.00 p.m. on its official website for which the entrance test was conducted on 28th February this year.

This year DTE, Maharashtra had raised the bars for the aspirants as the basic eligibility criteria was revised under which the applicants must have scored at least 50% aggregate marks at graduation to appear in the entrance test compared to 45% of previous years.

Another interesting fact which came up was that number of commerce graduates were in higher number than the engineering graduates which has been the case always.

The second stage of group discussions and personal interview will be conducted from May 10 to 31, while final merit list will be released on June 23.

Earth Day India in search of hidden sources of water

The search for fresh sources of water to meet the expanding need of a burgeoning population has prompted the water resources ministry to conduct an extensive mapping of the country's aquifers ahead of the environment & earth day 2011. The proposed mapping, backed by the Planning Commission, will include a search for palaeowater or groundwater that has remained hidden for several thousand years.

Interestingly, palaeowater aquifers as a potent source for freshwater was discovered recently while conducting hydrological experiments. These aquifers lie hidden deep into the earth and cannot be easily located. Nevertheless, the quality of water extracted from such confined and deep sources is better in comparison with water obtained from the shallow or first- level aquifers which may be contaminated.

Besides, the shallow aquifers located 30 to 40 meters below the earth are over exploited and hence there is an urgent need to look for alternative sources of freshwater.

“ The first- level water is being dried up or getting contaminated,” said Bhishm Kumar, scientist and head, hydrological investigation division, National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) , Roorkee, under the water resources ministry.

The aquifer mapping, which is likely to be carried out by the Central Ground Water Board, will help in identifying dynamic aquifers at greater depths that can be utilised for drinking and irrigation.

“ There may be thousands of palaeowater sources in India, but no systematic survey has been conducted yet to find this out,” Kumar said.

A study conducted by NIH to ascertain the intrusion of seawater into groundwater in the Krishna-Delta region of Andhra Pradesh found that water samples in the region were more than 25,000 years old, according to a paper published by the institute in December last year.

Similarly, an environmental isotope study to ascertain the age of water in the Bhadka- Bheemda area in Barmer, Rajasthan in 1996, confirmed the existence of palaeowater which was between 4,000 and 9,500 years old.

MHADA Forms 2011 on sale as lottery & results dates are declared

Mumbaikars can now finally be sure about their dream homes as the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has finally announced that they would start accepting the application forms from April 27 and the lottery for 4,034 houses would be declared on May 31. " Vice President and Chief Officer of Mumbai Board on Tuesday in a meeting decided the entire schedule of the lottery," said Amarjit Manhas, chairman, Mumbai board.

The advertisements would be published on April 27 and from the same day online filling up of forms would be started. The submission of forms would be allowed till May 16. Though the allotted period of 20 days seems

to be very less compared to the earlier 90 days period provided to fill up the forms, MHADA officials are confident that the period would be enough.

"Since the filling up of forms is online, people can fill the forms even during the night time and hence this period would be sufficient" said Manhas. While Axis Bank has been selected for collection of applications, following MHADA failing to interest banks to be collection centres.

Axis has around 65 branches in and around Mumbai where the applicants would be able to submit their forms. The people living in other districts of State can also submit their forms and the earnest money deposited in the district headquarters of Axis Bank, need not travel to Mumbai. The amount of money differs for different categories. " The deposit money would be returned within three days of announcement of lottery to the people who don't win the houses," added Manhas.

The lottery would be a bonanza for the economically weaker section as around 80 percent of houses out of the total 4,034 houses are kept for their category. Though earlier it was said that the lottery wouldn't be having any houses for the higher income groups, there is a small share of houses for them too.

For the first time MHADA would be going for an online application of forms. The applicants have to go to the website of MHADA and fill up the application forms. Once the form is filled the applicant would have to take a printout of the same and paste his photograph on the space provided. Then he would have to sign the form and submit it at the nearby bank branch.

Since many people could find it tough to fill up the form online, MHADA has also provided a facilitation centre at the branches of the banks wherein the applicants would be assisted by the bank staff. Axis Bank has also tied with Sify, who has around 85 cyber cafes in the city.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba pass away

Puttaparthi: Spiritual leader Sri Sathya Sai Baba died at the Sathya Sai super speciality hospital at Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district today.
Doctors said he died at 7.40 am of cardio-respiratory failure. The 84-year-old was admitted to hospital on March 28 with breathing and heart problems.
His condition since Thursday morning had been described as "very critical" by doctors attending to him. Most of his organs were not responding to treatment. The condition of his liver and his low blood pressure were causing concern, they had said.

As doctors announced his death, they appealed to people to be calm and not rush to hospital. Security has been tightened in the area. All roads leading to the hospital have been blocked and shops have been ordered to close at Puttaparthi.
Godman to some, miracle-man to others and revered as God by lakhs of his followers, Sathya Sai Baba had the rich, famous and powerful from the world of politics, business, films and sport flocking to his doorstep in Puttaparthi, the small Andhra Pradesh village that he made internationally famous.

Born on 23 November 1926 in a modest family in Puttaparthi, Satyanarayana Raju declared himself a reincarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba at the age of 14. From then on his devotees and admirers only grew in numbers over the years.

Though a few controversies did cast shadows on Sai Baba's image and critics have been skeptical about claims that he would produce holy ash, golden rings and mementoes from thin air, Sathya Sai Baba also earned respect for setting up world-class educational and health institutions and also for charitable work like drinking water projects for four semi-arid districts of Andhra Pradesh and in Chennai. The institutions and properties that he built are estimated to be worth over Rs. 27,000 crore.

After a hip fracture in 2006, Sathya Sai Baba was confined to a wheel chair and gave darshan from his car or a portable chair.

sachin tendulkar birthday

Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who turns 38 on Sunday, has decided not to celebrate his birthday and remains doubtful for the Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Deccan Chargers here in view of the worsening condition of the spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba.
Tendulkar is an ardent devotee of the 85-year-old Baba, whose condition is very critical.
Tendulkar said he is praying for Baba's quick recovery.
"I am praying for Shri Sathya Sai Baba's quick recovery. Hope everyone will join me in praying for his return to good health," Tendulkar said on Twitter.
The Mumbai Indians' captain did not arrive with the team on Saturday for the match against Deccan Chargers here on Sunday but is expected to come later in the day, according to sources in the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA).
He is, however, uncertain for the match and has also decided not to celebrate his birthday, sources said.
"He may stay away from Sunday's match so that he can visit Puttaparthi, the pilgrim town in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, in case of any eventuality," sources said.
Tendulkar, who has visited Puttaparthi on several occasions to seek Baba's blessings, had planned a party in the hotel to celebrate his birthday. The Mumbai Indians' management and HCA officials had even made some arrangements for the party.
